Winter, sun and the stone
Granite, porcelain and dense quartzite are the stones that last on a Henderson County porch; engineered quartz stays indoors. Winters here freeze. National Weather Service normals for Asheville, whose station is Asheville Regional Airport beside Fletcher, put the average January low near 29 degrees for 1991 to 2020, and NOAA's record low at Hendersonville is 14 below zero. Water that soaks into stone and freezes expands and pries it apart, the process geologists call frost weathering, so the stone that survives outside is the one that takes up little water. Summer sun is the other test. Wikipedia's engineered stone article states that the polyester resins in quartz are not fully UV stable, that engineered stone should not be used outdoors, and that UV exposure can discolor it and break down the resin binder. Caesarstone's own warranty for its standard quartz does not cover outdoor applications. So we do not put ordinary quartz on a porch, even a covered one.
Porcelain
A vitrified ceramic that absorbs under half a percent of water, which makes it frost resistant. Neolith, a sintered stone maker, says its surfaces are not damaged by UV, rain or extreme weather.
Dense quartzite
A hard metamorphic rock that began as quartz sandstone. We choose a dense slab and seal it, and we test it with water before we commit it to an open patio.
Quartz, only if it is made for outside
Caesarstone sells a separate outdoor collection with its own warranty. Ordinary indoor quartz is the one to keep off the porch.
Grills, sinks and cutouts
A built-in grill is cut to the dimensions in its maker's installation guide, so we ask for the grill model before we template. When the island frame is wood or another combustible material, grill makers call for an insulated jacket, and the opening is then sized to the jacket rather than the grill. Blaze's jacket instructions add a limit worth knowing: the jacket protects combustible materials below the cooking surface only, so the clearances above, behind and beside the grill in the owner's manual still apply. Those clearances decide where a raised bar, a backsplash or a seating overhang can sit, which is why the grill is placed on the drawing first and everything else is laid out around it. A licensed gas professional makes the gas connection, and a licensed plumber connects any outdoor sink; we cut the openings and set the stone.

What outdoor counters cost
Outdoor kitchen countertops in Henderson County are typically estimated at roughly $1,500 to $15,000, a wide band because a porch serving counter and a full patio grill island are very different jobs. That range is from our trade ticket bank, not a quote.
- Length and slab count. A short porch counter may come from part of one slab; an L-shaped grill island may need two.
- Stone. Porcelain, granite and dense quartzite each price differently, and quartzite usually sits highest.
- Cutouts. A grill, a side burner, a sink and an ice chest each add shop work.
- Bar overhang. A raised or seating overhang outside needs support that will not rust.
- Access. A steep backyard, stairs down a hillside lot or a long carry around the house adds people on install day.
- Tear-out. Lifting an old tile or concrete top off an existing island is its own line.
These numbers are estimates and they may change once we see the site; the written quote after the free measure sets the final price, driven mostly by the stone, the size and the number of cutouts.
Covered porch or open patio
A covered porch keeps snow and most rain off the top but not all of the sun: low winter light and late afternoon sun reach well under a roof, which is why a covered porch still gets UV-stable stone. An open patio top takes everything, so it has to shed water. We plan open tops so rain and melting snow run off the edge instead of standing in shallow pools that freeze overnight. Overhangs outside follow the same logic as inside, with one change. Steel brackets under an outdoor bar top must resist rust, and stainless steel, an alloy with chromium, is the standard choice. Where the caulk joint meets the house wall or a sink, we use a silicone sealant, since silicone stays stable across a far wider temperature range than a mountain porch will ever see.
Covered porch
Granite, porcelain or dense quartzite. Sun still reaches it, so indoor quartz is still out.
Open patio
Porcelain or a dense, sealed granite, with the top planned to drain off its edge.
Screened porch
More sheltered than an open patio, but still exposed to cold and humidity, so it gets outdoor stone too.
Care between seasons
Outdoor care is mostly about keeping water out and off. Granite and quartzite are natural stones that take a penetrating sealer; a sealant, in Wikipedia's definition, blocks fluids from passing through a material. How often yours needs renewing depends on the slab, so we test the top with water at install and show you what to watch for. Porcelain barely absorbs water and needs no sealer.
- Fall. Clean off grill grease, and reseal granite or quartzite if a splash of water darkens the stone.
- Winter. Brush snow off rather than chipping ice with a metal tool, and keep any cover breathable so moisture does not sit on the stone.
- Spring. Check the silicone joints at the sink and against the house, and replace any that have pulled away.
- Summer. Wipe up marinades and citrus quickly, especially on a natural stone.
Outdoor counters across Henderson County
The site shapes the porch kitchen. Laurel Park homes on the slopes of Jump Off Mountain often cook on a deck facing the view, where access for a slab can be the hardest part of the job. Flat Rock estates tend toward full patio kitchens with a grill island and seating. Farmhouses and newer homes around Mills River lean toward a long covered porch counter. Fletcher's 1990s and 2000s subdivisions often have a patio ready for a grill island, and in Etowah's golf-community homes a screened porch with a small serving counter is a natural fit.

Can I use quartz for an outdoor kitchen?
Not ordinary indoor quartz. Its resin is not fully UV stable and the standard warranty excludes outdoor use. A quartz line made and warranted for outdoor use is the exception.
Will granite crack in a Henderson County winter?
A dense, sealed granite on a top that drains holds up well, because the damage comes from water that soaks in and freezes. We pick the slab and plan the drainage with that in mind.

Yes. Sun reaches under a porch roof for part of the day, and the cold reaches everywhere, so we use the same stone choices as for an open patio.
